Lesson One

What Is Money and Why It Matters

Money is something special that people use every single day. It helps us buy things we need and want. But money is more than just coins and bills! Money only works because everyone agrees it has value. It is like a shared promise that makes trading easy.

What Is Money?

The 4 Jobs of Money

🛒

Spend

Trade money for food, toys, and things you need. (Medium of Exchange)

🐷

Save

Keep money safe so it still has value later. (Store of Value)

⚖️

Measure Value

Use prices to compare what things are worth. (Unit of Account)

📅

Pay Later

Borrow now and promise to pay back over time. (Standard of Deferred Payment)

Types of Money

🪙 Physical Money

This is money you can touch and hold in your hand.

  • Coins like pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
  • Paper bills like $1, $5, $10, and more
  • You can put it in your pocket or piggy bank

💳 Digital Money

This is money that lives on computers and phones. You cannot hold it, but it is still real!

  • Debit cards you swipe at stores
  • Gift cards for your favorite places
  • Phone payments with apps
  • Online banking on computers
💡
Fun Fact

Most money today is digital. That means it is stored on computers instead of in wallets!

Life Before Money: Bartering

1

Person A Has Apples

They grew apples but need bread to eat.

2

Person B Has Bread

They baked bread but want fresh apples.

3

They Trade!

Apples for bread. Both are happy! Money solves the problem perfectly by giving everyone a common tool to trade fairly and easily.

Why Was Bartering Hard? Both people had to want what the other had. Items were not always equal in value. Money solved these problems by giving everyone one shared way to trade!
MoneySomething everyone agrees has value and can be used to buy things, save for later, and trade fairly.
BarterTrading one item directly for another item, without using money.
Physical MoneyCoins and paper bills you can hold in your hand.
Digital MoneyMoney stored on computers or phones, like debit cards and mobile payments.
ValueHow much something is worth.
✏️ Real World Activity

Barter Challenge!

Find 3 small things around your house (a snack, a pencil, a sticker, a hair tie. Anything!). Pretend each one is worth something different. Now pick a family member and try to trade your way into something of theirs you'd actually want, like a turn picking the show, an extra 10 minutes before bed, help with a chore. Write your answers on paper:

  • Was it easy or hard to find a trade you both liked?
  • How would having money have made this easier?
  • What's one thing a debit card or app can do that coins cannot?

Earning Money, Needs vs. Wants, and Spending Smart

People earn money by helping others and doing useful work. Money is a reward for effort and skills! Once you have money, the smartest thing you can do is decide what you truly need before spending on what you want.

Earning & Needs

How Do People Earn Money?

💼

Working at a Job

Adults go to work where they help people and earn money. Every job is important!

🏠

Helping at Home

Kids can earn money by doing chores like cleaning, taking out trash, or yard work.

🍋

Small Business

Starting something like a lemonade stand teaches real business skills from an early age!

Skills and Strengths

🎨

Being Creative

Drawing, writing stories, or making things up. Creative people solve problems in new ways!

🗣️

Explaining Things

Helping others understand ideas clearly. Great teachers and leaders have this skill!

📋

Being Organized

Needs vs. Wants

✅ Needs

Things you must have to live safely and healthily.

  • Food to eat every day
  • Clean water to drink
  • Clothes to wear
  • A safe place to live

🎮 Wants

Things that are fun or nice to have, but you can live without them.

  • Toys and games
  • Video games
  • Candy and treats
  • Extra snacks
Smart Money Rule: Always take care of needs first, then spend on wants second. This keeps you healthy and happy!

Spending Smart: Ask These 3 Questions

1

Do I Really Need This?

Think about whether it is a need or a want before you open your wallet.

2

Can I Save Instead?

Maybe you can wait and save for something even better down the road.

3

Is There a Better Choice?

Look for good quality at a fair price. Smart spenders get more from their money and feel good about their choices!

EarnTo receive money in exchange for doing work or providing a service.
NeedSomething you must have to stay safe and healthy.
WantSomething fun or nice to have, but not required to survive.
SkillSomething you are good at doing that can help others and earn money.
Smart SpenderSomeone who thinks carefully before buying and chooses value over impulse.

My Skills, My Future

Draw a star on a piece of paper and write your name in the middle. On each point of the star, write one skill you have (drawing, helping, organizing, being kind, being funny, building things). Then write your answers underneath:

  • For each skill, who is one person you could help with it?
  • Could you earn money with that skill someday? How?
  • Now make your own list: pick 5 things in your room and sort them into Needs or Wants.
