What Is Money and Why It Matters
Money is something special that people use every single day. It helps us buy things we need and want. But money is more than just coins and bills! Money only works because everyone agrees it has value. It is like a shared promise that makes trading easy.
The 4 Jobs of Money
Spend
Trade money for food, toys, and things you need. (Medium of Exchange)
Save
Keep money safe so it still has value later. (Store of Value)
Measure Value
Use prices to compare what things are worth. (Unit of Account)
Pay Later
Borrow now and promise to pay back over time. (Standard of Deferred Payment)
Types of Money
🪙 Physical Money
This is money you can touch and hold in your hand.
- Coins like pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
- Paper bills like $1, $5, $10, and more
- You can put it in your pocket or piggy bank
💳 Digital Money
This is money that lives on computers and phones. You cannot hold it, but it is still real!
- Debit cards you swipe at stores
- Gift cards for your favorite places
- Phone payments with apps
- Online banking on computers
Most money today is digital. That means it is stored on computers instead of in wallets!
Life Before Money: Bartering
Person A Has Apples
They grew apples but need bread to eat.
Person B Has Bread
They baked bread but want fresh apples.
They Trade!
Apples for bread. Both are happy! Money solves the problem perfectly by giving everyone a common tool to trade fairly and easily.
Barter Challenge!
Find 3 small things around your house (a snack, a pencil, a sticker, a hair tie. Anything!). Pretend each one is worth something different. Now pick a family member and try to trade your way into something of theirs you'd actually want, like a turn picking the show, an extra 10 minutes before bed, help with a chore. Write your answers on paper:
- Was it easy or hard to find a trade you both liked?
- How would having money have made this easier?
- What's one thing a debit card or app can do that coins cannot?
Earning Money, Needs vs. Wants, and Spending Smart
People earn money by helping others and doing useful work. Money is a reward for effort and skills! Once you have money, the smartest thing you can do is decide what you truly need before spending on what you want.
How Do People Earn Money?
Working at a Job
Adults go to work where they help people and earn money. Every job is important!
Helping at Home
Kids can earn money by doing chores like cleaning, taking out trash, or yard work.
Small Business
Starting something like a lemonade stand teaches real business skills from an early age!
Skills and Strengths
Being Creative
Drawing, writing stories, or making things up. Creative people solve problems in new ways!
Explaining Things
Helping others understand ideas clearly. Great teachers and leaders have this skill!
Being Organized
Keeping things neat and planning ahead. This skill helps in almost any job!
Being Helpful
Caring for others and working in teams. Many jobs need people who enjoy helping!
Needs vs. Wants
✅ Needs
Things you must have to live safely and healthily.
- Food to eat every day
- Clean water to drink
- Clothes to wear
- A safe place to live
🎮 Wants
Things that are fun or nice to have, but you can live without them.
- Toys and games
- Video games
- Candy and treats
- Extra snacks
Spending Smart: Ask These 3 Questions
Do I Really Need This?
Think about whether it is a need or a want before you open your wallet.
Can I Save Instead?
Maybe you can wait and save for something even better down the road.
Is There a Better Choice?
Look for good quality at a fair price. Smart spenders get more from their money and feel good about their choices!
My Skills, My Future
Draw a star on a piece of paper and write your name in the middle. On each point of the star, write one skill you have (drawing, helping, organizing, being kind, being funny, building things). Then write your answers underneath:
- For each skill, who is one person you could help with it?
- Could you earn money with that skill someday? How?
- Now make your own list: pick 5 things in your room and sort them into Needs or Wants.
Saving Money, Setting Goals, and Watching It Grow
Saving means keeping money for later instead of spending it right now. It is one of the smartest things you can do! Saving is like planting a seed. It grows over time and becomes something amazing.
Why Save Money?
Reach Goals
Save for things you really want, like a special toy or game.
Prepare for Surprises
Have money ready when something unexpected happens.
Feel Proud
Watching your savings grow makes you feel responsible and happy!
How to Set a Savings Goal
Choose Your Goal
Pick something you really want to save for.
Find the Cost
Learn exactly how much money you need to reach your goal.
Save Regularly
Put aside small amounts of money each week. Even $1 or $2 adds up!
Track Your Progress
Watch your savings grow closer to the goal each week!
Week 1: Save $5 | Week 2: Save $5 more ($10 total) | Week 3: $15 total | Week 4: $20 total. Goal reached! Breaking big goals into small steps makes them easy to reach!
Watching Money Grow with Interest
You Save $100
Put your money in a savings account at the bank.
Bank Adds Interest
After time passes, the bank adds a little extra money as a thank-you for saving.
Your Money Grows
Now you might have $105 without doing anything extra!
Over time, interest helps money grow faster and faster. The longer you save, the more it grows! This is why starting early is such a superpower.
My Savings Goal Chart
Pick something you actually want to save up for, like a book, a small toy, a treat, or a video game. Write the price at the top of a sheet of paper, then build your own savings tracker:
- Draw a thermometer and divide it into equal weekly steps
- Color in one step every time you save
- Math check: if you save $3 a week, how many weeks until you hit $12?
- Bonus: tell a parent your goal and ask if there's a small chore you could do to earn extra toward it
Budgets, Banks, and Staying Safe Online

Put it away for a future goal. If you get $10, save $5!
Spend, 30%
Use it for something you need or want right now. That is $3 of your $10.
Share, 20%
Give it to help someone in need. Even $2 can make a real difference!

Split the $10 Budget

- Save (50%) = $___
- Spend (30%) = $___
- Share (20%) = $___
- What would you save toward? What would you spend on? Who could you share with?
- Check your math: did you use every dollar? Does it add up to $10?
